Three Cents Coin Auctions
The United States Three Cents was first introduced in 1851 and it was minted up to 1889. The main principle behind the production of the three cents was to serve as an intermediate denomination between the half dime and the cent. This way, it won’t be difficult to change some legal tender foreign coins that were in circulation at the time.
The first series of three cents were made of silver, and were called as ‘trimes.’ There are three subtypes under silver three cents: Type 1 (1851-1853), Type 2 (1853-1858), and Type 3 (1859-1873)—all of which came about due to the changes done with the outlines. Nickel versions of three cents were minted from 1865-1889.
