Dimes Coin Auctions
Some may think that dimes, worth only ten cents, are too small an amount to be of any value to anyone. Tell that to die-hard numismatics who find it a great pleasure to collect even the humblest of coins.
When the dime was first minted in 1796, there was no showing of its face value on the coin but the confusion dissipated in 1809 when ’10 c’ appeared on the coin . It showed Lady Liberty on its obverse and an eagle on its reverse. The 1798 version had the seal of the United States on its head and a magnificent eagle on its back.
In 1892, Lady Liberty was returned on the dime face and was designed by Charles Barber, it was nicknamed the “Barber dime”. Another well-known dime is the “Mercury dime” which ran from 1916 to 1945. It was so-called because the portrait of Lady Liberty had a cap with small wings on the side, symbolic of the Roman god, the messenger Mercury. The current dime now features the profile of President Roosevelt.
A lot of US dimes, if you are interested are available online, especially on eBay which has a wide number of coins. Dime collecting could be the start of your hobby as a serious numismatist. As the popular saying goes, it’s good to start small.
