The 2009 Gold Buffalo Bullion Coins also known as the American Buffalo started making headlines when the series was first minted and released in 2006. In 2009, the 24 karat bullion gold coins were reported to be sold out on December 4, after its first release to the public by the United States Mint on October 15 of the same year.

The most recent statement made by the US Mint indicates that 79,500 pieces of the 2009 Gold Buffalo Bullion Coins were sold to the public, only a few weeks after its initial release.
A total of 200,000 pieces of the 2009 Gold Buffalo Bullion Coins were minted and sold by December 4 the same year. The obverse side of the coin was decorated with a portrait of the head of a male Native American, a design which was first used in 1931 for the Indian Head Nickel. The designer, James Earle Frasier, designed the head with a mixture of the chief from three major American Indian tribes who actually posed live in front of him during the sketch. The obverse side of the coin also have the inscriptions of “Liberty” and “2009” as the year of the mintage.
On the reverse side of the coin, Frasier engraved a bison or commonly referred to as the American buffalo atop a mountain of dirt. Other engravings on the reverse side of the 2009 Gold Buffalo Bullion Coins are “In God We Trust”, the face value of “$50”, the inscription of the “United States of America”, “E Pluribus Unum”, and the coin’s gold fineness value “1 oz. .9999 Fine Gold”. The Gold Buffalo Bullion Coins were measured at 1.282 inches in diameter and 0.116 inches thick.
