The Abigail Fillmore First Spouse Gold Coin was released to the public on March 18, 2010, being the first First Spouse Gold Coin to be released in 2010 was also the 13th coin in the series to be released. The 24 karat First Spouse Gold Coin program was created to commemorate and honor the First Ladies of the United States of America. This First Spouse Gold Coin series was struck at the United States Mint at West Point.
Abigail Fillmore was born Abigail Powers on March 13, 1798. Born in Stillwater, New York, she married Millard Fillmore who was the 13th President of the United States in February 5th, 1826. Abigail Fillmore’s father was a Baptist minister named Reverend Lemuel Powers died shortly after she was born and she was then raised by her mother with her brother. After receiving her education, she took up a teaching post in an academy in New Hope and met Millard Fillmore, who was then 19 years old, the oldest pupil in her class. From then on, their student-teacher relationship evolved into serious relationship and they got married when she was 26 years of age.
After her marriage, Abigail Fillmore continued teaching at school and maintained her love for education following the birth of her first son Millard Powers Fillmore. Millard Sr. and Abigail’s love for books initiated the building of their personal library which she then looked after. Four years after giving birth to their first child, Abigail delivered a beautiful baby girl who they named Mary Abigail Fillmore.
The Abigail Fillmore First Spouse Gold Coin’s obverse side carries the portrait of Abigail Fillmore which was both designed and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill. The obverse side also has the inscriptions of “Abigail Fillmore”, “In God We Trust”, “Liberty”, “W” represents West Point as the mint origin, “13th” Presidency, “1850-1853” represents the presidential term for President Milliard Fillmore and “2010” as year of the mintage.
The reverse side of the Abigail Fillmore First Spouse Gold Coin is the image of the Abigail Fillmore in the White House Library placing the book on the shelf. The library was then filled with $2000 worth of book collections. Other inscriptions on the coin’s reverse are “United States of America”, “E Pluribus Unum”, “$10” face value, and the “1/2 oz .9999 Fine Gold”. The gold coin was struck in two versions which are the proof and the uncirculated coins.
The proof version first went on sale at the price of $729 each and the uncirculated version was selling at $716 during which the gold price was between $1,100 to $1,150. The United States Mint have declared that only 15,000 coins will be made available across the proof and uncirculated versions. The low number of coin struck is to avoid getting the 13th series of the First Spouse Gold Coin to hit a new low in terms of unsold products that can be contributed by low demands.
