The craze for the First Spouse Gold Coins is on the up once again after the announcement of the releasing of the Buchanan’s Liberty Gold Coin on September 2010. This is the third First Spouse Gold Coin series in the year 2010 after Jane Pierce’s First Spouse Gold Coins in June 2010. The Buchanan’s Liberty Gold Coin gained interest by avid gold coin collectors, always eagerly waiting for its release.
James Buchanan was the 15th President of the United States and was in charge of the office from 1857-1861. Prior to his presidency, he was a big shot attorney represented the state of Pennsylvania in the House of Representatives or the United States. He also served as a Senate as well as the Minister to Russia during the presidency of Andrew Jackson.
Besides serving under President Andrew Jackson, James Buchanan also served under two other United States Presidents. Under President James K. Polk, Buchanan served as a Secretary of State and during the Presidential year of Franklin Pierce, Buchanan was given the duty to serve as the Minister to United Kingdom. While serving under President Pierce, he assisted in drafting the Ostend Manifesto, a controversial document that described the rationale of purchasing Cuba from Spain for the United States.
The James Buchanan’s Liberty First Spouse Gold Coin sported the design of the Liberty Head which was also used on the $2.50 Gold Quarter Eagle. The design debuted in 1840 to 1907 and was originally created by Christian Gobrecht. The Liberty Head was used as President Buchanan was not married and remained the only bachelor to have spear heading the presidential office. Other than the Liberty Head, the obverse side also has the period of the presidential years 1857-1861, the inscription of “In God We Trust”, “15th Presidency” and the date of issuance “2010”.
On the other hand, the reverse side has the inscription of “United States of America”, “E Pluribus Unum”, the face value of the gold coin “$10”, and also the inscription of the gold coin’s weight and fineness “1/2 oz. 999 Fine Gold”. The reverse side’s image on the centre of the James Buchanan Liberty Gold Coin portrays the President during his pre-youth years where he worked as a bookkeeper in a store owned by his parents in a small store in the country.
Since the James Buchanan’s Liberty Gold Coin was released to the public on September 2 2010, the initial price of the uncirculated version started at $766 while the proof gold coin version started at $799 each. After 3 days of release, both uncirculated and proof versions sold 3,641 and 2,486 respectively. The coin mintage across both uncirculated and proof versions will be limited to only 15,000 coins. The gold coin will also be available on sale for duration of a year or when the sale reached its 15,000 limit.
