Hot Springs National Park Quarter

In the early 2010, the United States Mint released a program named the America Beautiful Quarters Program in honor of the 56 national parks or the national sites of each state in the District of Columbia and the United States territories including American Samoa, US Virgin Islands, Guam, Puerto Rico and the Northern Marina Islands. The program was officially kick-started with the release of the first series which was the Hot Springs National Park Quarter which was launched on April 19, 2010.

The historical day was held at the Hot Springs National Park administration office that happened on the same day of the park’s 178th anniversary. The Hot Springs National Park was officially established as a national park in 1921 and was declared as a hot springs reservation or for public use by the United States Congress in 1932. With the total land area of 5,550 acres, the Hot Springs National Park is the smallest national park albeit the oldest national reserve in the United States, hence the honour of being the first national park to be immortalized on the America Beautiful Quarter coin collection.

The Hot Springs National Park has been used by the public for various types of treatment including to treat rheumatism and skin infection caused by fungus. Other illnesses that can be cured by dipping in the hot spring include nervous infection, kindred diseases as well as diseases that usually infect women. The Hot Springs National Park has also built bath houses to accommodate the paying visitors as well as the government servants.

On the day of its release, the United States Mint circulated the Hot Spring National Quarter in two versions which were the 100-bags and the two-roll quarter sets. The 100-bags consist of the quarters that were minted in Denver and Philadelphia at $32.95. Whereas the two-roll quarter sets that contain 40 pieces of the coin were sold at $32.95. All coins were minted with either “D” or “P” to distinguish their original minting location.

The reverse side of the Hot Springs National Park Quarter design was created by Don Everhart and sculpted by Joseph Menna, both the US Mint Sculptor-Engravers. The design on the quarter’s reverse features the Hot Spring National Park’s administration building that also includes the national emblem of the National Park Service on the side. Other engravings include the inscriptions of “Hot Springs”, “Arkansas”, the mintage year “2010” and the “E Pluribus Unum”.

The quarter’s obverse side is decorated with the portrait of President George Washington where the design will be donned by the other 55 America Beautiful Quarter coins throughout the duration of the program. The other four national parks that will be honoured in 2010 are the Yellowstone National Park, Yosemite National Park, Grand Canyon National Park and Mt. Hood National Forest and the remaining 51 coin series will be circulated within the duration of 10 years.
