Abigail Adams was the spouse of the United States’ second President, John Adams, who took the Presidential office after George Washington. Abigail was born in Weymouth, Massachusetts, on November 11th, 1744. The Abigail Adams First Spouse Gold Coin was released on the same day as the release of the Martha Washington first spouse gold coins, which was on June 19th 2007. It was the second edition of the series that honours the United States President’s spouses.
Abigail Adams was also infamous for the many letters she and President John Adams wrote each other containing intellectual discussions she had with her beloved husband on matters ranging from politics to the government issues. This has been portrayed in Abigail Adams first spouse gold coins series on the reverse side, writing a memoir to John Adams while he was in Philadelphia. The letters are said to be the eyewitness of the Revolutionary War from her political interpretation and insights, and her counsel was valued by John Adams himself.
The reverse side of the coin also features the inscriptions of “United States of America”, “E Pluribus Unum”, the coin’s face value “$10”, “1/2 oz”, and the coin’s purity “.9999 Fine Gold”. Other than that, it also has the inscription of “Remember the Ladies”, in which Abigail requested her husband to be included in the framework for the new Republic. The designer of the Abigail Adams First Spouse Gold Coins series was Thomas Cleveland and the image of Abigail Adams writing the memoir was sculpted by Phebe Hemphill.
On the obverse side, which was designed by Joseph Menna, has the inscription that features the portrait of Abigail Adams. The other features include inscriptions of “Abigail Adams”, “Liberty”, In God We Trust”, “2nd” as the order of the Presidency, the term John Adams was in the office in 1797 to 1801. The mint mark “2007 W” was also included in the obverse side.
The coins series were made available to the public in both proof and uncirculated versions which was priced at $429.95 and $410.95 respectively, with a combined mintage of 40,000 coins. The coins were sold out in just a few hours of their circulations.
