Andrew Jackson Liberty Gold Coins

The third First Spouse Gold Coins Series that was circulated in 2008 was of Andrew Jackson’s Liberty Gold Coins. The series was first circulated on August 8th that year by the United States Mint. Andrew Jackson was the seventh President of the United States who took the office from 1829 until 1837. Before he took the over the Presidential Office from John Quincy Adams, he was a commander of the American Forces in 1815 and served as a Military Governor of Florida in 1821.


During his term as President of the United States, he was the catalyst of the Jacksonian Democracy era, in which he drawn his political philosophy and monopolized the political era before him. President Andrew Jackson was famous for his hardship in his earlier life and his hero act against the British Army, he was nicknamed “Old Hickory”.

His was officially married to Rachel Donelson Robards Jackson in 1794 but Rachel Jackson died in 1928, a few months before he was appointed as the President of the United States. This lead to his First Spouse Gold Coins on the obverse engraved with the image of a Capped Bust Lettered Edge Half Dollar, in accordance with The Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005. The Liberty image was originally designed between 1807 and 1836 by U.S. Mint Engraver, John Reich. The obverse also include inscriptions of “Liberty”, “In God We Trust”, his “7th” Presidency, his Presidential terms from “1829-1837” and the mintage year in “2008 W”.


The reverse design of the Andrew Jackson First Spouse Gold Coins was designed by Justin Kunz and sculpted by Don Everhart. The design inscriptions include Andrew Jackson’s hero nickname, “Old Hickory”, complete in a uniform mounting a horse. Other inscriptions also included were the ‘United States of America”, “e Pluribus Unum”, “$10” as the coin’s face value, the gold content “1/2 oz”, and the coin’s purity “.9999 Fine Gold” statement.

The proof and uncirculated versions of the coin were initially sold at $619.95 and $599.95 respectively but were later adjusted as a result of the fluctuation of gold price. The sales recorded for both versions published by the US Mint were 7,805 for proof and 4,754 for uncirculated coins, which was made available until early September 2009.
