Born in the city of London in 1775 to an American father and an English mother, Louisa Adams was the first First Lady to be born outside the United States of America. As a child, Louisa Adams was mostly raised in Nantes and London, when her father was in service with the United States as a Consulate General in London. She also finished her education in France when her family had to move to that country when she was only three years old.
Louisa Adams was married to John Quincy Adams, the son of the then President of the United States, John Adams and Abigail Adams, when she was 22 years old and her husband, 30 years old. They met in London and were married on July 26th, 1797. Although her husband’s father objected to his son marrying a foreigner, he soon accepted his son’s wife in the family.
All the travelling around Europe following her father has been the theme for Louisa Adams’ First Spouse Gold Coins design on the reverse side. The image, sculptured by Charles Vickers, portrays Louisa Adams with her son, Charles, travelling across Europe to meet her husband in Paris. Other inscriptions that the reverse side had include “United States of America”, “E Pluribus Unum”, “$10” representing the face value of the coins, gold purity of “.9999 Fine Gold”, and “1/2 oz” gold content. The gold coin was initially released to public on May 29th 2008.
On the obverse side of the coins, were designed by Susan Gamble and sculptured by Phebe Hemhill with the portrait of Louisa Adams, the Presidency period of John Quincy Adams in “1825-1829”, the inscription of “Louisa Adams”, “Liberty”, “In God We Trust”, and also the mint marks of the year “2008 W”.
The US Mint released two versions of the Louisa Adams First Spouse, the proof and the uncirculated versions. The proof version coins were priced at $619.95 while the uncirculated version has an initial price tag of $599.95. The Louisa Adams First Spouse Gold Coins were sold until July 2nd, 2009.
