The designer, James Earle Frasier, designed the head with a mixture of the chief from three major American Indian tribes who actually posed live in front of him during the sketch. The obverse side of the coin also have the inscriptions of “Liberty” and “2009” as the year of the mintage.
On the reverse side of the coin, Frasier engraved a bison or commonly referred to as the American buffalo atop a mountain of dirt. Other engravings on the reverse side of the 2009 Gold Buffalo Bullion Coins are “In God We Trust”, the face value of “$50”, the inscription of the “United States of America”, “E Pluribus Unum”, and the coin’s gold fineness value “1 oz. .9999 Fine Gold”. The Gold Buffalo Bullion Coins were measured at 1.282 inches in diameter and 0.116 inches thick.
