Dolley Madison First Spouse Gold Coins

Dolley Madison, born Dolley Payne on May 20th, 1768, was the 4th first spouse of the President of the United States, James Madison. Dolley married James Madison who was then a Representative and the co-author of the Federalist essays, after she was widowed when her first husband, John Todd in 1790.

The Dolley Madison First Spouse Gold Coins series was the fourth and last First Spouse Gold Coins release in 2007 when they were circulated for public on November 19th 2007. Dolley is said to be the most famous First Spouse during her era thanks to her charm. She was also given the trust to accompany President Jefferson for official functions on a few occasions when James Madison was still serving as the Secretary of States. She later received the title First Spouse when her husband took the Presidency in 1809, which lasted for two terms.

The obverse side of the coin was designed and sculptured by Don Everhart which featured Dolley Madison’s portrait, the inscription “In God We Trust”, “Liberty”, “4th” representing the order of the Presidency, “1809-1817” as the Presidential term, and finally “2007 W” representing the mint mark and year of minting.

The Dolley Madison first spouse gold coin reverse was also sculpted by Don Everhart and designed by Joel Iskowitz. It featured the image of Dolley Madison during her infamous act to save the portrait of George Washington from the White House fire set by the British troops in August 1814. Furthermore, the reverse includes the inscriptions of “United States of America”, “E Pluribus Unum”, the coins face value of “$10”, the “.9999 Fine Gold” purity inscription and “1/2 oz” representing the gold content of the coins.
