Letitia met John Tyler in 1808 during his studies as a law student and courted for five years before John Tyler asked for her hands in marriage. At 23 years of age, Letitia was officially married to John Tyler which led to 29 years of happily married years. Her devotion to her husband and family can be seen as she opted to stay behind the political and public glare by staying at home in Virginia. During her husband’s Presidential term in 1841 to 1845, Letitia Tyler already suffered from a paralytic stroke that disabled from serving as the First Spouse to her President husband and succumbed to the illness in 1842.

The obverse side of the Letitia First Spouse Gold Coins feature the portrait of herself. The other inscriptions include her living years as the first spouse from “1841 to 1842”, the “10th” Presidential order, “Letitia Tyler”, “Liberty”, “In God We Trust”, and the mint mark “2009 W”. The obverse was designed and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill.

On the other hand, the reverse side of the coins portrayed the Letitia Tyler and her two children at their home in Cedar Grove Plantation. Letitia sound management of the grove meant that John Tyler only needed to focus on his politics. The inscription on reverse side include the “Cedar Grove Plantation” theme, “United States of America”, “$10” as the face value, “E Pluribus Unum”, “1/2 oz” of gold content, and “.9999 Fine Gold” as the statement of its purity.

The series were distributed to the public offering both proof and uncirculated versions. The initial selling prices of both coins were $629.00 and $614.00, both proof and uncirculated respectively.
