Sarah Polk First Spouse Gold Coins

The Sarah Polk First Spouse Gold Coins series was the 12th coins series issued in honour of the President’s spouses. The release of the series also marked the third series that was released in 2009 and began its circulation on September 3rd that year. Sarah Polk was born Sarah Childress on September 4th, 1803, and was the First Spouse of the United States’ 11th President, James Polk.

Sarah Polk married James Polk when she was only 20 years of age and he 28. She had the chance to get education at the Moravian Female Academy at North Carolina, and was considered as the most privilege women during her time. Her study at the academy includes Roman and Greek vast world history and literature. The education given to her played a major role in enhancing her knowledge and stand in many political discussions that she had joined.

The Sarah Polk First Spouse Gold Coins were released by the United States in conjunction of the Gold Coins series to honour all of the Presidents’ First Spouse. The coin was made of 24 karat gold and Sarah Polk series was the third series released in 2009. The coins’ obverse were designed and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill, featuring the portrait of Sarah Polk, the Presidential term “1845 – 1849”, the order of the Presidency “11th”, the inscriptions of “Sarah Polk”, “In god We Trust”, “Liberty”, and the mintage year “2009 W”.

The reverse side on the other hand was also designed and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill, and the side featured the image of Sarah Polk on duty as her husband’s private secretary during his term as the President of the United States. Other inscriptions include “United States of America”, “E Pluribus Unum”, “1/2 oz” gold content, “$10” face value of the coins, and “.9999 Fine Gold” as the indicator of its purity.

The Sarah Polk First Spouse Gold Coins were reported to have sold over 4,500 of proof version and over 2,800 of uncirculated versions. The coins are still up on sale and are likely to be on sale until after a year of the version’s initial release date. Both the proof and uncirculated were first made available at $645 and $641 respectively.
