When it comes to minting billions of coins, it is not impossible for the United States Mints to commit errors.Error coins are usually fixed through quality control procedures; however, there are certain occasions when mistakes are overlooked by inspectors. Thus, these error coins get circulated. It is also highly possible that some error coins were deliberately made, since their mere existence brings matters of suspicion and fraud.
An error coin is termed after the specific slip-up that occurs in its production. Some examples of error coins include the following: broadstrikes, off-center struck coins, double and multiple struck coins, indents, brockages, counter brockage, fold-over strikes, dual-type, transitional and proof errors.
